Life as a military spouse is more demanding than anyone could have ever prepared you for; you have to deal with all the struggles of normal life as a wife and mom, as well as your partner being gone for months at a time, and constantly picking up your life and moving somewhere new.
Of course, we don’t like to complain about our own troubles when our partners are serving our country, often putting their lives on the line, but things at home are hard. I thought because I’m a veteran too that I would find it easier – not the case! It’s just as hard, even if you too have served. One thing that has significantly helped bring me back to myself has been starting my own business, and I believe it will do the same for you, too.
Here are 5 reasons to start your own business as a military spouse.
Create Something for Yourself
Becoming a military spouse inherently means you are willing to put other people before yourself. You are willing to put your country, your partner’s, and your children’s needs before your own. This is noble, but it leads many military spouses to lose their sense of self. When you choose to start your own business, you choose yourself.
Before I started my business, I didn’t realize how I was pushing myself to the bottom of the list. I sidelined my goals to be everything to everyone else (I’m sure you can relate!) When I started my business, I reignited lost passions and turned them into something that made me money.
Your Own Business is Flexible
It there’s one thing you need from a business or job as a military spouse, it’s flexibility. No job you go out and get will ever be as flexible or fulfilling as your own business. You need a job that works around your schedule – not one that dictates it. You can create a business of your own that only requires the time you actually have to give it.
Your Own Business is Portable
My business has been with me all over the world; I picked it up and took it with me to South Korea (which was a huge challenge for my family) and back again. Finding a job you know will be temporary is not only difficult as employers are less likely to want to hire you, but you can’t let yourself become attached to it. Your own business relies on you alone, so it goes wherever you go.
Making Your Own Money is Empowering
It wasn’t until my business started making money (not long after I started it) that I felt how truly empowering it is to make your own money. We spend a lot of time on the home front, taking care of the home and kids and making sure everything moves forward while our partners are away. When you make your own money, you feel powerful – you are contributing to the household monetarily.
None of us ever want to feel like we are beholden to someone else, but no matter how good our relationship is with our partner, if we don’t have any money to call our own, it often feels like that. Creating your own income boosts your self-esteem, your confidence, and your self-worth, and those feelings will leak into all areas of your life.

It's not as Complicated as You Think
Starting your own business isn’t as complicated as you think, and you are absolutely capable of doing it. You are strong and intelligent (you’re a military spouse!) and have all the skills you need to become a thriving business owner.
